The spin cycle starts, and suddenly your washer sounds like a jackhammer. It bangs against the wall, “walks” across the floor, and stops with F0 E5 flashing. This code stands for “Unbalanced Load”. The computer detected dangerous vibration and killed the power to prevent damage.
The Fix: You need to replace the set of 4 suspension rods that hold the tub up. It’s like changing the shock absorbers on your car.
🎥 The Repair Video
Watch this guide by Parts Dr. They show the “Top-Down” method, which is much easier than flipping the washer over. You’ll see how to unhook the old rods and drop in the new ones.
🛒 Parts & Tools Checklist
Whirlpool uses different rod lengths for different models (Cabrio, Bravos, VMW). Check your model number carefully!

The Part (Suspension Kit – 4 Rods):

(This is the most common kit for Whirlpool Cabrio / Maytag Bravos.) -
Essential Tool (Grease):
White Lithium Grease
(To lubricate the top and bottom mounting balls.)
🏀 Step 1: The “Bounce Test” (Diagnosis)
How do you know if the rods are bad?
- Open the lid (empty washer).
- Push the tub down hard with your hand and let go.
- Good Rods: The tub should rise up and stop immediately (maybe 1 small bounce).
- Bad Rods: The tub will bounce up and down like a pogo stick (3-4 times). If it bounces like a basketball, the springs are shot. Replace them.
🛠️ Step 2: Replace the Rods
Do this one rod at a time so the tub doesn’t fall.
- Tape the Lid: Secure the lid so it doesn’t smack you.
- Lift Top Deck: Remove rear screws, slide the top forward, and lift it up (support it with a prop stick).
- Lift & Twist: Lift the tub slightly to take weight off the rod. Turn the rod 90 degrees to unhook it from the top bracket.
- Remove: Pull the rod out.
- Install New: Grease the new cups. Hook the bottom first, then pull up and hook the top. Repeat for all 4 corners.
🔄 Step 3: Calibration (Yes, Again)
Even for mechanical parts, the computer needs to recalibrate the weight sensors.
- Enter Diagnostic Mode: Turn dial Left-Right-Right-Right-Left-Right.
- Turn dial to “Rinse” (Calibration).
- Press Start.
- The washer will run a dry test to “feel” the new suspension. Once done, F0 E5 is history.
