Whirlpool Washer F51 Error Code Fix: Rotor Position Sensor (DIY Guide)

The washer tries to spin but stops, flashing F51. This code indicates a Rotor Position Sensor (RPS) Failure. The main board cannot detect the speed or position of the motor, causing the cycle to abort.

⚠️ Check the Bolt First! Before you buy any parts, remove the back panel and check the large bolt in the center of the motor rotor (the big wheel). If this bolt has vibrated loose, the sensor cannot read the magnets properly. Tightening this bolt is a common “free fix” for F51!

The Fix: If the bolt is tight and the wiring harness is secure, the RPS sensor board has likely failed and needs replacement.

🎥 The Repair Video: Step-by-Step Replacement

This repair is performed entirely from the back of the washer. You will need a standard socket wrench and possibly a hex key.

Note from Steve: At 01:50, he removes the central rotor bolt. When you reassemble this later, ensure it’s tightened very securely. If it’s even slightly loose, the F51 code will reappear within a few cycles.

🛒 Parts & Tools Checklist

The RPS sensor is a small circuit board found directly behind the motor stator.

🔧 Step 1: Remove the Rotor

Safety First: Unplug the washer before starting.

  1. Remove Back Panel: Unscrew the small hex screws to take off the rear metal cover (see 01:20 in the video).
  2. Remove Rotor Bolt: Use your socket wrench to remove the large 1/4″ (or hex) bolt in the center of the big wheel (see 01:50).
  3. Pull the Rotor: Pull the large magnetic wheel straight off. The magnets are quite strong, so you may need a firm, steady tug (see 02:25).

🔌 Step 2: Swap the RPS Sensor

Behind the rotor, you will see the copper coils of the stator and the white plastic sensor board.

  1. Unplug Harness: Disconnect the wire harness from the white sensor assembly (see 03:20).
  2. Unclip: Use a flathead screwdriver or your fingers to gently unclip the old sensor from the stator frame.
  3. Install New: Snap the new W10183157 sensor onto the stator and reconnect the wire harness firmly.
💡 Steve’s Diagnosis Tip: While you have the rotor off, inspect the magnets inside the rim. If you see cracks or missing chunks in the magnetic ring, the sensor is likely fine—you need a new Rotor Assembly instead.

🔄 Step 3: Reassemble & Test

  1. Slide the rotor wheel back onto the shaft.
  2. Tighten the bolt very securely. (See 07:30). Some pros use a drop of blue thread-locker (Loctite) on this bolt.
  3. Plug in and run a “Rinse & Spin” cycle to verify the fix.
