If your Whirlpool washer refuses to start and flashes F5 E1, your machine isn’t broken—it’s just “confused” about whether the lid is safe. This code stands for “Lid Switch Fault”, meaning the washer thinks the lid is open even when it’s closed. For safety reasons, it will not spin until this part is fixed.

The Fix: In 95% of cases, the Lid Lock Assembly has physically failed or the magnetic sensor is dead. The fix is a simple part swap that takes about 15 minutes.

🎥 The Repair Video

Watch this crystal-clear guide from Parts Dr. It shows the exact process of accessing the lid lock on modern Whirlpool/Maytag top loaders. Don’t skip the part where he tapes the lid down—it saves your fingers!

Note from Steve: The video shows a newer model, but the “Lift and Slide” top panel removal method (starting at 0:42) applies to almost all F5 E1 repairs.

🛒 Parts & Tools Checklist

You need the specific Lid Lock Assembly for your model. The one linked below is the most common for the “Cabrio/Bravos” style washers that get this code.

🔧 Step 1: Access the Lock Mechanism

Safety First: Unplug the washer.

To get to the lock, you need to lift the main top deck of the washer.

  1. Secure the Lid: Use painters tape to tape the glass lid shut. This prevents it from smashing open when you lift the deck.
  2. Remove Rear Screws: Move to the back of the washer. Use your 1/4″ Nut Driver to remove the hex screws securing the top hinges or the control panel cover.
  3. Slide and Lift: As shown in the video [0:50], slide the entire top deck forward about half an inch, then lift it up like a car hood.
  4. Prop it Up: Use a block of wood or have a helper hold the top deck up so you can work underneath.

🛠️ Step 2: Remove the Broken Lock

Now you are looking at the underside of the top deck.

  1. Locate the Lid Lock Assembly on the right side.
  2. Remove the Cover: Some models have a plastic bezel protecting the lock. Unsnap it.
  3. Unscrew the Lock: Remove the two screws holding the lock assembly to the lid.
  4. Disconnect the Wiring: Follow the wire harness back to the control board or the quick-disconnect plug. Unplug it.

Steve’s Field Note: While you are here, check the “Lid Strike” (the plastic hook on the lid itself). If that hook is broken or bent, even a new lock won’t fix F5 E1 because the machine can’t “feel” the lid closing. Make sure the strike is solid!

✅ Step 3: Install and Test

  1. Screw the new lock into place.
  2. Route the new wire harness exactly how the old one was (use the clips to keep it away from the spinning tub!).
  3. Lower the top deck and secure the rear screws.

Calibration is Mandatory!

After installing the new lock, you MUST recalibrate the washer, or the F5 E1 code might stick.

  1. Plug the washer in.
  2. Enter Diagnostic Mode (typically: Turn dial Left, Right, Right, Right, Left, Right).
  3. Turn the dial until the “Rinse” LED is on (Calibration Mode).
  4. Press Start. The washer will run for 2-3 minutes, clicking the new lock to learn its position.
