The washer completes the wash cycle, but the clothes are soaking wet. Or, it makes a grinding noise and stops. The display flashes F7 E5. This code stands for “Shifter Fault”. The computer is trying to shift the transmission from “Agitate” to “Spin,” but the Shifter Actuator isn’t moving, or its optical sensor is blind.

⚠️ Critical Requirement: Unlike other parts, replacing the Shifter requires CALIBRATION. If you install the new part but don’t run the calibration mode (Step 3), the F7 E5 code will NOT go away.

The Fix: The plastic gears inside the Shifter Actuator are stripped, or the optical sensor lens is dirty. Replacing the Shift Actuator is the standard fix.

🎥 The Repair Video

Watch this classic guide by RepairClinic. It shows how to access the bottom of the washer and swap out the actuator. It’s an easy DIY job that takes about 15 minutes.

Note from Steve: At 01:45, pay close attention! You must align the actuator pin with the hole in the cam ring. If it’s not aligned, the washer won’t shift.

🛒 Parts & Tools Checklist

This is one of the most common failure points on Whirlpool Top Loaders.

HZ Step 1: Access the Bottom

Safety First: Unplug the washer and tape the lid shut.

  1. Tilt the Washer: Lean the washer back against a wall, or lay it down on its front (use a blanket to protect the front panel).
  2. Remove Cover: Remove the plastic belt guard (held by two screws) to see the motor and pulley system.
  3. Locate the Shifter: It is the black box with a white arm and a red optical lens, located near the transmission pulley.

🛠️ Step 2: Replace the Actuator

Inspect the old one. If you see white plastic dust around it, the gears are stripped.

  1. Unplug: Disconnect the wire harness.
  2. Unscrew: Remove the two green mounting screws.
  3. Remove: Pull the actuator straight off.
  4. Install New Part: Make sure the white plastic pin on the new actuator fits into the hole on the transmission arm.
  5. Secure: Tighten the screws and reconnect the wire.

🔄 Step 3: Calibration Mode (DO NOT SKIP)

The computer needs to learn the position of the new shifter.

  1. Stand the washer up and plug it in.
  2. Enter Diagnostic Mode: Turn the cycle dial Left, Right, Right, Right, Left, Right (1 click each, all within 6 seconds). All lights should flash.
  3. Select Calibration: Turn the dial right until just the “Rinse” LED is on.
  4. Start: Press the Start button.
  5. Wait: The washer will hum, click, and spin for 2-4 minutes. Do not interrupt it.
  6. Once it stops and the lid unlocks, F7 E5 is cleared.
